Berlin, 17. September 2025 — The Mercedes-Benz car2space Challenge of INNOSpace Masters invites innovators to apply space-inspired technologies to real-world mobility requirements. The winning teams receive the opportunity to implement a Proof of Concept co-funded by Mercedes-Benz as well as access to coaching, mentoring, and experts from Mercedes-Benz Research and Development.
leitspalt was recognized for its concept "Multifunctional structural cooling for EVs" - a battery pack core architecture that integrates thermal management, cell holding, and structural functions into a single unified solution. Where conventional battery systems treat these as separate components, leitspalt's approach integrates them directly into the core structure of the pack, reducing component count and system complexity while improving performance and cost.
Expected impact at pack level includes:
- Cost savings through reduced complexity and integrated functions
- Improved energy density through optimized packaging efficiency
- Higher cooling performance enabled by a significantly enlarged cooled cell surface area, supporting high C-rates during fast charging
- Compatibility with multiple cell formats and chemistries
Being selected as a Top 3 team highlights the relevance of architecture-level innovation in battery packs, where thermal performance, manufacturability, and cost must be engineered together.
